Topeka’s China Express blunders complaint inspection; Fifty rodent droppings under dining room soda fountain

Kansas Department of Agriculture’s (KDA) food safety and lodging program conducted an unannounced retail food inspection on 3/13/2020 following KDA receiving a complaint from the public. As a result of that inspection, and due to the severity of the specific violations the China Express was cited as being, “Out of Compliance” with Kansas food safety regulations. During this inspection a total of 3 violations were found.

The inspector made the following comments in support of the violations found during the inspection:

  • In the walk in cooler there was a plastic bus tub of crab rangoon filling made with cream cheese and imitation crab meat. There was no date marking. Employee said the filling was made on 3/11. Corrected on site (COS)–Crab Rangoon filling was date marked. In the walk in cooler there was a plastic bus tub of cooked chicken with no date marking. Employee said the chicken was cooked on the morning of 3/12, held for more than 24 hours. COS–chicken was date marked.
  • In the reach in cooler beneath the refrigerated prep table there was an opened can of bamboo shoots with no date marking. Employee said the bamboo shoots were opened on 3/10. COS–bamboo shoots were date marked.
  • In the cabinets under the dining room soda fountain there were more than fifty rodent droppings and fiberglass insulation which appeared to be used as nesting material. Establishment is serviced monthly by a licensed pest control operator. January 7th report from pest control operator showed no pest activity, owner could not locate report from February treatment.
