Roaches; Root Coffee House in Pittsburg closed at inspection; “Licensee did not cease operations and notify KDA of the imminent health hazard of pest infestation”

The Kansas Department of Agriculture’s Bureau of Food Safety and Laboratory Services conducted an unannounced retail food inspection on 2/19/2020. As a result of that inspection, and due to the severity of the specific violations the Root Coffeehouse and Crêperie was cited as being, “Out of Compliance” with Kansas food safety regulations. During this inspection a total of 5 violations were found.

The inspector made the following comments in support of the violations found during the inspection:

  • A female employee entered the coffee prep area from a different part of the building and immediately began preparing a customer beverage without first washing her hands. COS- The employee washed her hands.
  • Baked Empinatas were being stored in direct contact with a Rubbermaid container lacking any indication of being made of food grade materials. COS- The PIC moved the items to a food grade container.
  • Three live roaches, of various sizes, were found in the lower kitchen chemical cabinet. One live roach was found in the food storage cabinet to the north of the cash register. One live roach was found on the baseboard of the food storage cabinet located to the north of the cash register. Two live roaches were found on PEX plumbing pipe behind the double door reach in cooler. One intact egg sack was found beneath the single door reach in cooler. Two live roaches were found on the wall behind the single door reach in cooler. The PIC provided pest control invoices indicating monthly treatment for roaches. COS- The PIC agreed to voluntary close.
  • Two aerosol cans of Raid Ant & Roach (EPA Reg. No. 4822-596) were found in a lower cabinet in the kitchen area. The chemical is labeled for Household Use Only. The PIC was unsure if employees had been using the chemical to treat for roaches. COS- The PIC removed the item from the establishment.
  • The Licensee did not cease operations and notify KDA of the imminent health hazard of pest infestation. COS- The PIC agreed to voluntarily close.
